My Design Philosophy
I like to keep things nice and simple - rarely will you see any images on my sites, nor any large complex designs. Websites, in my opinion, exist to give the user information, not to give them eye candy.
Sure, some deviance from the norm is nice, at times, but going overboard with huge Flash and Shockwave sites is not needed and it detracts from the information. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of nice "game websites" that have Flash and Shockwave games, but that is not information dissemination; it is entertainment.
I also believe that websites should be fast loading, and look relativly the same in all browsers (which is why I use XHTML and CSS). XHTML and CSS are web standard designed to make all sites (that validate) look the same so we don't have the problem of some pages working in some browsers and not others.
I should note now that this website doesn't look proper in Internet Explorer 6. Seems hypocritical to state that the pages should all look the same in each browser when this doesn't look right in IE. The point is, valid code should look the same in all browsers (that support those standards): IE does not support some CSS attributes I use, and so it doesn't render properly. Sorry IE users, use a better browser, such as Opera.
Simply put, the way I design pages is: Keep it simple; make it standards compliant.
